This term means adding something new to the religion that was not there during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Scholars have divided innovation into two categories: good innovation (bidaa’ al-hasna) and bad innovation (bidaa’ al-sayyah). Understanding “what is innovation” is essential for every Muslim so that he can keep his worship and beliefs in line with the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and avoid any unlawful actions in the religion.
